Don’t make me do it!!

Currently I am having problems with Linux Mint 13 XFCE edition. These started rather soon after installing this operating system to my laptop. You see I got excited over tweaking my system and in the process, ended up messing up my connectivity to the internet. This was as a result of messing with the bottom panel.

Once that happened things seems to just go downhill from there. It would seem like an easy fix to get it right to where I started from, but it wasn’t. No! Not by a long shot I am afraid.

I tried “googling” the situation….to no avail. I just ran into a mountain of problems that had nothing to do with me whatsoever and that was very frustrating to me.

I tried just making another panel this time putting the love on top, but it didn’t work. I also started having problems with certain programs not being responsive at all.

No bueno!!!

Looks like I made too much of a change too quickly.  Granted I do realize that I chose a small segment of an already relatively small segment of operating systems at least in terms of documentation, so for it to be harder to find the info I need isn’t as surprising as it would be otherwise.

I did get so frustrated that I was considering moving to Mate or Cinnamon. Yet I didn’t really want to make that change. So I decided to try to exhaust my options before I do it.

So what are my options?

1.  Install the Cinnamon or Mate desktop on my existing system.

2. Go to the Linux Mint forums and ask them about my issues

3.Check out Reddit (tried that got nowhere)

Of course, I could just go back to Ubuntu. Then I would be back in familiar territory. 12.04 isn’t awful so I may give it a go.

Something else that got me thinking was episode 122 of MintCast I was listening to the hosts discuss this very version of Linux Mint 13 XFCE edition and they were quite against it for a number of reasons. At the same time they were working with the “RC” (release candidate) version so it wasn’t the finished product.

As a result I would like to give the benefit of doubt that the concerns were addressed before the final release was done, or even before now. One could reasonably assume so as that episode occurred back in July of 2012.

Either way I don’t know how this is all going to work out but I will keep you posted on what happens.

As you can see I love working with various Linux Operating Systems, as well as programs that are Open-Source in nature. Speaking of nature, I love long walks where there is plenty of it.

  1. I’ve had issues with Ubuntu deleting driver files after upgrading to anything higher than 10.04 LTS, and Linux Mint was noticeably better looking than Ubuntu, but the fact that it’s based on it with a small varient, the mint menu and icons/look… I feel that Linux Mint does not produce any good OS’s and Ubuntu started to bring over populated updates… now that they’ve gone commercial, they have started innovating, but they’re making the performance worse, and not many people know how to switch desktop environments, let alone install a driver from a .tar file.

    • Yes, Ubuntu has made changes that a lot of Linux Enthusiasts are not fond of. In fact I have written several posts on my dislike of Unity, although I must admit I have softened up a lot on my feelings towards it. What distro do you run on your PC/laptops?

  2. Hmm, I’ll check it out in virtualbox. Why do you like it so much?
