Mint 13: “The freshmaker”, part 1

Well well well, its that time again.   No, not time for the perculator ,but for another release of Linux Mint.   This time, we are on number 13.   It is available to run using Mate’ or Cinnamon. Two  desktop environments that are relatively new, but are taking the world by storm nonetheless.

I wish to thank the Linux Mint team yet again for their concern about what “the people want”.  This was not just making a change for the sake of change as has been remarked about Ubuntu.  The new direction that has been going on since 11.04, and the apparent rift between those who prefer Unity and those who liked it “the way we were”.   I can at last say that I have tried Unity for a while now, it got a fair chance, but it’s just not for me.   I really really wanted it to work for me, but it just didn’t.   Such a pity.

It is because of that that I have made the decision to run Mint 13 on at least one of my PC’s at home and even my laptop, instead of Ubuntu 12.04.   I don’t feel as though it is awful, I just prefer the taste of mint.   There are those who prefer to use something that at least looks like Gnome2 by default and I am one of them.   So as it turns out, I am not a “one in a million” after all.

I downloaded the iso file last night and ran it in a program called VirtualBox with the host OS being Ubuntu 10.10.   LOL!! I thought I told you that we won’t stop!   Using it that is.  It will be supported for five years  just like Ubuntu 12.04 and thats awesome.  Yet another reason why it like it.

Remember the old Mentos commercials from the 90′s?

I don’t know why, but I thought of that commericial right when I was about to write this post.  Then I watched and said to myself:  I have got to use this!

Well here it is!

I thought you would like that.   Keep on the look out for I will be talking more about my experiences with Linux Mint 13.  If you have any experiences with it please let me know.

  1. It will be interesting to see how Cinnamon develops in Mint 13 and in the next release. I tried Cinnamon and it still fells clunky. I think that Cinnamon is a good compromise between Unity and Gnome3. Also, XFCE 4.10 will be in 12.10 Xubuntu. Right now, I am still favoring XFCE 4.8 on Voyager Linux, which is a spin of Ubuntu 12.04.

I question the decision of the Mint team to have multiple desktop environments with Cinnamon and Mate, especially considering how buggy Mate was in Mint 12. Choice is usually a good thing, but they need to make sure they are able to get everything ironed out with one environment before moving on to others.

I tried Cinnamon a while ago, too.

Sorry to say I agree Ubuntu lost its way with Unity!
I was tempted to go with Mint just the like the majority of loyal Ubuntu users were forced to do. I now use backtrack 5r1 full time. Still ubuntu based so not far from my original loved OS

    • Thats pretty cool! What made you decide that BackTrack would be best for you personally

Hi Anthony, Reasons behind using backtrack, The amount of security apps bundled is incredible. I work in security and it has all the tools I require all in one place, tested, tweaked including required dependencies all in one place. On top of this with release of BT5 it comes with Gnome 2 option making it a must for me, as stuck in my ways. Support for a small distro is as you could imagine shocking but as based on lucid Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS easy to find stuff online. myexploit.wordpress.com/ was set up to document how to use the security tools.

Have to say like your blog you are show great linux skills

      • Thanks so much! I am just a guy that was determined to learn something new. I wanted more options and boy did I get them. I am still learning and I invite others to learn right along with me. I appreciate you sharing more about Backtrack I already have a live CD of it and I must admit, its quite interesting.
